Temple History

Namaste,

After crossing the Thamarassery Ghat and traveling five kilometers from Lakkidi, on the Pookode Lake-Padinjarathara Road, a concrete path leads up Vaidyagiri Hill, ending at the entrance to the temple. Here, you are greeted by approximately 260 stone steps, which lead to the top of the hill and the beautiful shrine of Lord Murugan. The temple is surrounded by medicinal plants and is called "Vaidyagireeshan" (Lord of the Healing Mountain) due to its association with these herbs. This ancient temple is centuries old, with the deity facing east. On the path to the temple, you can see the Vythiri River flowing from south to north, merging with the Kaveri River to the east, and eventually meeting the sea. The temple is closely connected to the nearby Shiva-Parvati temple on the shore of Pookode Lake and the Mariamman Temple in Vythiri.

Years ago, a sage lived in this area, and after his time, there was no one to take care of the place. Devotees and community groups made several efforts to restore the temple. Eventually, Krishna from the Pariyarathodi family donated around one acre of temple land to the Vishva Hindu Parishad. Over time, both district and state committees of the Vishva Hindu Parishad worked together to bring the temple to its current state.

Priests from the six abodes (Aarupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan in Tamil Nadu, along with temple priest Shri Kumar, laid the foundation stone. The Murugan idol was installed by the Thantrees of Pazhani Malai. The temple was consecrated in March 2014 and has since been a source of blessings for residents and visiting devotees, welcoming people of all castes and religions.

The temple also houses idols of Lord Krishna and Guru, with a special shrine for Devi. There are two daily poojas, and on Sundays, devotees perform head-shaving rituals and offer food as prasadam. Hundreds of devotees visit regularly, participating in rituals such as Kavadi and milk abhishekam, along with eight forms of abhishekam.

The main festival is Thaipooyam in the month of Makaram, celebrated along with Soora Samhara Mahotsavam, Painkuni Mahotsavam, Vaishakha Mahotsavam, and Pratishta Day celebrations. Various rituals such as Choroonu (first feeding of children), marriage ceremonies, and Ezhuthiniruthu (initiation of writing) also take place. On Thaipooyam day, pooja rituals are conducted under the guidance of Sabarimalas former Mel Shanti, Shri Shashi Namboothiri. All the temple activities are managed by local devotees as a service. Thousands of devotees participate in the Thaipooyam celebrations, with many traveling on foot, carrying Kavadi and milk pots from distant locations. Devotees are actively working on various services to elevate this temple into one of Kerala’s renowned temple destinations.
